Medical and Dental

Prince Rupert School has a team of two fully qualified nurses on duty from 07:45 - 22:15 daily. They treat minor injuries, ailments and medical problems, liaising with parents as required. They are responsible for organising clinics with the Optician, Counsellors and with the Health Visitor from Hameln for vaccinations. They assist the Dental Centre in arranging routine dental inspections and in locating students within school to ensure attendance at appointments with both Dentist and Orthodontist.

There is one nurse on an early shift covering from 07:45hrs in the school. The nurse on the late shift moves up to the Boarding Lodge at the end of the school day and remains on duty until 22:15hrs. During the night any emergencies are taken to the local Krankenhaus by the staff on duty - this is only a few minutes drive away.

Any illness requiring a doctors consultation and medication should be dealt with by your own Medical Centre, although in an emergency boarders can be temporarily registered in Hameln if necessary.

All medication must be handed into the nurses and must only be dispensed by the nurse. There are forms to be completed to authorise this - the forms can be obtained from the School Nurse by fax or e-mail if preferred. For safety boarders are not permitted to keep medication in their rooms. This includes items that are bought 'over the counter' such as cold remedies.

Dental treatment is available in a purpose equipped Dental Centre within the school complex, this is run by the Hameln Dental Staff.

What should I do if my child has been ill over the weekend?

If your child is ill at the weekend or on Monday morning, they should be kept at home until they feel better. It is our experience that children recover more quickly and are happier at home when unwell. Unfortunately there is no provision for a student who is found to be unwell on waking to remain in their bed as the Boarding Lodge is unstaffed during the day. These boarders would be escorted to the Medical Room in school and handed into the care of the nurse on duty. In some cases the nurse is contacted as she arrives on shift and will visit the Boarding Lodge to assess the situation.

If you do keep your child at home please inform the school House Office (Kendal 05751 970329 or Rinteln 05751 970200), of the nature and likely length of time of the absence.

If your child recovers part way through a week please try to make arrangements to return them to school and boarding.

What happens if my child has a prolonged illness at school?

If a boarder is likely to be ill for more that 24 hrs you will be contacted so that arrangements can be made to get them home.

In the event of any medical emergency you will be contacted as soon as possible - you may need to make arrangements to travel to our local hospital or medical centre.

Please ensure that the school and Boarding Lodge are kept informed of any change in contact details to ensure that it is always possible for someone to get in touch with you should an emergency arise.
