Admissions

Prince Rupert School is part of Service Children's Education, which is a Defence Support Agency.  SCE aims to reflect the good educational practice in England and Wales and, thus, provision will conform in type and scope to that available in the UK.  The professional direction and general administration of the Agency is under the control of the Chief Executive, Mrs. L Fisher, HQ SCE, Wegberg, BFPO 40.

Prince Rupert School is an 11-19 years age group comprehensive school catering for students in a geographical area.  The main catchment areas are Buckeburg, Hameln, Herford, Bad Oeynhausen, Bunde, Detmold and Rinteln for day students and Munster for 6th Form boarding students.  Currently students from the Gloucester School catchment area attend PRS for Sixth Form courses which are not available at Gloucester School.

Students from Primary Schools in Hameln (Weser School), Herford (Lister School) and Detmold (Sir John Mogg) join PRS for the start of their secondary education in Year 7.  Attendance is normally on a daily basis.

Entitled students who attend PRS from outside the catchment area of the School do so under their own travel arrangements.  Parental choice to do this may be exercised only after gaining permission from the Area Education Officer, Mrs J Johns, SCE (Bielefeld), Rochdale Barracks, B.F.P.O. 39.

We are keen to help students get off to a good start in their new school.  The following procedures are designed to enable us to make entry into the school as welcoming and effective as possible.

We hope that students arriving in our catchment area will be able to join the school as soon as possible.  Please contact the School Secretary, telephone number 05751 970320 or Rinteln Military (84) 2320 who will be pleased to arrange an interview with the appropriate House Leader.

On the day of admission, at least one parent is required to attend an interview with the prospective student at the school.  We feel that this meeting of parent(s), student and school is essential to enable students to gain a satisfactory start to their time here and to enable the establishment of a partnership between school and home.  Normally students stay at school for the rest of the day after the initial interview.  At the interview, parents and student will be introduced to the ‘Home-School Agreement’.  This gives a clear indication of what parents can expect from the school and what the school will expect from parents and students.

The above admissions procedure does not apply to students transferring normally from Year 6 in one of our feeder primary schools where no change of unit is involved.

Students arriving and who need to join the Boarding Lodge must contact the School Secretary who will forward a ‘Boarding Pack’ which consists of an Application for Boarding Form SCE 3001 and a medical pack.  The SCE 3001 must be signed by the Unit OC and Headteacher before being forwarded to the Area Education Officer, telephone 0521 92543542 or Bielefeld Military (81) 3542.  This is to be completed before a student can commence at the school.

At the start of the academic year in September, the first day of term is set aside for admissions.  Appointments should be booked through the school secretary.

It is important that parents contact their local Station Housing and Community Office to ensure that suitable arrangements are made for the bus journey to and from school.

Documentation

Application form (SCE 3001), the student’s birth certificate, past school reports, transfer documents and National Curriculum records will be required by the school on admission day.

All students will join a tutor group.  They will meet with this group each school day for registration and often for other lessons too.  In some subjects students are taught in mixed ability groups whilst in others they are set according to ability or need.  Initial placement in teaching groups is made after interview, consideration of previous work and attainments or the completion of a sample piece of work.  The National Curriculum levels of attainment will also help in deciding upon the most suitable placement.

Students arriving in years 10, 11 and sixth form will be interviewed at length in order to determine the most suitable courses for them to follow.  Any reports, records or work from the previous school will be of valuable assistance, as will the results of National Curriculum tests from Year 9.

Leaving Procedure

In order to ensure that complete records get passed to your child’s new school it is important that you inform us in writing of your leaving date as soon as you know it.  Please pass this information to your child’s Key Stage Manager who will put the leaving documentation process into action. This will enable your child to take useful information to his or her new school.
